Situated in the heart of the Poitou Charentes countryside, 60 km south of the Loire, is the medieval village of Airvault. Here The Cottrell family offer a warm relaxed welcome at ‘The Voltaire' Bed and Breakfast in their 19th Century mansion home. You can see a brief slide show of our rooms at the bottom of this page.
The emphasis of ‘The Voltaire` is that you have an enjoyable and comfortable stay with us whether it is for 1 night, a couple of days, a week or more. All our bedrooms with their en-suite bathrooms are individually styled and furnished in a way sympathetic to the age of the house but with the emphasis on modern comfort. Our beds were chosen to give a superb night's sleep, which combined with egyptian cotton bedlinen, means that many of our guests find themselves sleeping for longer than they expected! As a result of this, breakfast can be served as late as midday, either in the spacious dining room or in the garden, weather permitting.
There is plenty of communal space for you to relax in, including a sitting room, the library with a selection of books and board games, the garden to the rear or out on the Sun terrace.
In this idyllic and unspoilt part of France we benefit from very high annual sunshine levels, second only to the Côte d’Azur, and the added beauty of being in the heart of the largest sunflower growing region in France.
Most amenities are available within a short walk, including bakeries, butchers' shops, restaurants, (next door is the Cygne restaurant) and bars Restaurant 12, banks (with cash machines), a chemist and much more. There is a market every Saturday morning selling local produce and even a beautician for those who may want a little extra pampering.
For those not wanting to go out in the evening, we can provide evening meals on request. We can also arrange to put a picnic together for you if you wish.
